We have a 20 year old son who is struggling. He doesn’t leave his room. Most of the day he sleeps. When he is not sleeping he plays video games or watches a little tv. He has no friends. I should say that the issues either began or were exacerbated by his smoking synthetic marijuana without our knowledge. This resulted in a 3 week rehab where he had hallucinated and heard voices. It seems those symptoms have resolved being off drugs for eight months now. Often I find he is rude to his mother

Abstaining from the drug is part of recovery program but that is not enough. In order to be functional one need to undergo the long term psychotherapy program which is around 12 weeks. Addiction is relapse prone disease. During psychotherapy you will learn how to handle craving, abstinence based problems, early relapse signs and contributing factors, emotion regulation etc. Recovery activities and sober skills is the key for long-term recovery. If you are not using drugs but life style is same as addict then that is not the drug free healthy life. Coming back to healthy functional life is the goal. Hi,
Its good that you are seeking help for your son. What usually happens after rehab is that if the patient doesn’t receive continued support they can sink into depression. The symptoms you are describing are of depression, though a formal diagnosis will be required. I would suggest counselling and clinical hypnotherapy for your son. The isolation is his way of not wanting to deal with his problems and the rudeness to mother is a sign of frustration. Pls help him receive timely counselling and help. I am available if you need support. Hope he gets well soon.
