4 unit dental crown
My upper central incisors were fractured in an accident. After that I got root canal on them. Lateral on I got braces for about 2 years. I am going to get crowns on them. But, the upper central incisors have about 3mm of tooth structure above gum line because of which my dentist is recommending getting 4 unit crowns and use lateral upper incisors to provide some support to the upper central incisor crowns? Also what could be its expected life?

Hello sir.. That 3 mm of tooth structure is enough to made post and core and then fixed crown of that two teeth....it is better not to involve the healthy lateral incisor.....the properly made post and core will provide a good lifetime of 5 years and more if the proper precautions are made.... the precautions are not giving any biting forces in front teeth....however clinical examination is necessary to conclude the treatment plan

That much tooth structure is sufficient , just go for post and core and crown only for the two central incisors . If possible dont get ur healthy teeth trimmed. Practo consult me if u living in pune

Dont involve the laterals bcos you are losing tooth structure of laterals which is not advisable. Plus conjoint crowns involving two teeth are not healthy to the gums in the long term. Either you go for post and core of centrals and individual all ceramic crwons or remove the centrals and go for implants. Eventually anytime within 5 years you will have to go for extraction of centrals as the prognosis of centrals with only 3mm tooth structure remaining is guarded. So if you dont want to spend twice on your treatment you can go for implants now also.

Yes . but if post and core has been done in root canal treated teeth, then those two can be done for crowns..lateral incisors give additional support to them.so it's fine.. expected life is good in it.at least for five years and more than that too..all depend on x-ray diagnosis.

Instead of 4 unit crown, you can do post and core in central incisors and go for 2 unit crown. No need to involve the lateral incisors. Again this is health science, we can't give warranty or guarantee like home appliances.. If the treatment is done properly and the maintenance from the patient side is good the crowns will perform well.
