If it is a recent knee injury keep it in a knee brace for one month and start with knee range of exercise after seeing a physiotherapy doctor. He can walk with knee brace.  Let him wear knee brace even during sleep and whole day. Remove only for exercise.  He can walk with it.  After one month if he is able to walk and climb without knee brace and having no fear of instability then just continue with exercise. But if any instability then better get diagnostic arthroscopic done with the decision to operate fir acl if it is torn or not stable or strong enough. Better also see ur  orthopaedic consultant from time to time to guide u after examining u
