I wanted to know what happens to a cortical button after a while.
had an ACL reconstruction and they used a cortical button to hold the graft in place. once the bone and everything else heals and incorporates the graft as part of the knee, what happens with the button that used to hold it in place? does it just fall off? dissolve?
i know bioabsorbable screws basically get absorbed over time but what abt this button?

It stays in the exact same place where it was put for as long as you can think with no local body reactions generally. We havent had a single patient come back to us with pain (related to the cortical button)
