Some amount of anxiety is normal and is required to function at reasonable level in the society. Unfortunately some of us develop increased anxiety that affect our lives. Causes can be numerous and treatment/support depends on the cause and nature of anxiety condition and associated other psychological problems. Causes are divided in to three groups. 1. Predisposing factors Individuals with family history of anxiety, anxious and dependent personality traits, etc are more likely to develop anxiety. 2. Precipitating factors or triggers Any traumatic or stressful event can trigger full blown anxiety condition. 3. Perpetuating factor or maintaining factors Ongoing stress, lack of treatment/support, Hormonal imbalance, anxious personality, dependent personality, medications, chronic physical health conditions, drug and alcohol problems, phobias, PTSD, OCD, depression, psychosis, etc prevent individual's recovery from anxiety.
