It’s a trigger if the thumb is getting stuck while flexing and straightening
Looks more like a ganglion
Simple anti inflammatory meds will suffice for now

Hello,
I understand you mother has swelling on the palmar aspect of base of thumb. This is usually seen with tenosynovitis and trigger thumb
Did she ever have locking sensation while extending thumb ,then it seems to be trigger thumb. If no episodes of trigger thumb then it could be early tenosynovitis.
Some modalities that may help in this condition early on -
1. Hot water fomentation
2. Ultrasonic therapy
3. Stretching
4. Splint to keep thumb extended at night
5. Tab Dolo 650 for pain
If no relief I would suggest you to consult with me directly or thorugh online appointment on Practo and I can help to suggest accurate treatment

The lump shown is thickening of A1 pulley causing TRIGGER THUMB. Try anti inflammatory tablets for five days and then warm fomentation. Then take an opinion from orthopaedic surgeon
It seems tenosynovitis and may be tendinitis leading to swelling and pain. Local ultrasonic therapy and rest of affected part may help. Exact diagnosis can be by examination and investigations. Is there any history of rheumatoid or gout arthritis?
NSAID drugs will be helpful if not contraindicated
