Cure For Longitudinal Melanonychia

I am 27 years old and have been a habitual nail biter since childhood. For the last 8-10 years, I have dark vertical bands on my nails along with generally dark nail color. A doctor suggested me to apply Betnovate-N (Betamethasone) in addition to stopping nail biting. Is Betnovate-N the right treatment for this condition?
