Eosinophilia
Eosinophilia is defined as a peripheral blood eosinophil count > 500/μL usually due to an allergic reaction or a parasitic infection or sometimes drug reaction.
SX - ask about recent travel (suggesting possible parasite exposure), allergies, medication use.
PE - Rash (allergic, dermatologic, or vasculitic disorders), abnormal lung findings (asthma, lung infections, or syndromes of pulmonary infiltration with eosinophilia), and generalized lymphadenopathy or splenomegaly (myeloproliferative disorders or cancer).
Next Steps
DX - CBC. Stool Ova and Parasite. CXR.
Health Tips
TX - Sometimes corticosteroids. Anti-parasitic medication. Drugs known to be associated with eosinophilia are stopped.
