Excessive Sleeping
Hi, My father feels very sleepy, he gets to sleep within minutes, even while sitting also. He is suffering fron excessive sleeping and drowsiness since many years. He is also a patient of sugar and high Blood pressure ,he take medicine for that also. He is also overweight. Kindly suggest what to do. Thanks

Hi, As per your information, your father is suffering from excessive daytime sleepiness which is often seen in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. This is commonly seen in obese individuals ( over weight patients). Other risk factors are consumption of alcohol and cigarettes

1. avoid consumption of alcohol and cigarettes 2. Weight reduction strategies: reduced calories intake, aerobic exercises or walking 3. if he is snoring a lot, let him sleep on bed with slight headup position 4. few patients may require lung function tests and sleep study 5. depending on severity few may require CPAP device to avoid snoring 6. in severe cases, surgery is also indicated
