Yes, Surgery is not a good choice for Anal Fistula for the reason of recurrence of problem and complications like Stool incontinence etc. At the same time oral medicines (Homeopathic/ Allopathic/ Ayurvedic) are of not much help. There is a specific Ayurvedic treatment called as Ksharsutra Therapy for curing Anal Fistula. Clinical trials conducted by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) at AIIMS New Delhi and PGI Chandigarh have confirmed that Ksharsutra treatment is more convenient and more effective than Surgery in patients of Anal fistula. In this treatment Ksharsutra - a medicated thread is placed in Fistula tract after precisely defining the tract with the help of MRI Fistulogram or careful probing. Medicine released from Ksharsutra debrides the fistula tract and induces healing of the tract. This medicine coated on the thread remains effective for 5-7 days so it needs to be replaced by a new Ksharsutra at a week or 10 days interval. No. of Ksharsutra changes required for complete healing of Anal Fistula depends on depth, direction and branching pattern of Fistula. It is observed that Fistula heals @ 0.5 to 1 cm per sitting so a Fistula tract of 3 cm length usually requires 4-5 sittings for complete healing.
