Have developed OA after prolonged RA
I am 32 yrs female in Noida. I had RA and have been taking medications for last 4 years. Due to pregnancy last yr my medications were reduced. I developed knee pain due to which for last 1 yr every 3-4 months I was given knee injection. After X-Ray recently it came up that join space has reduced. Now I am hopeless, what to do now? I cant think of knee replacement etc at this age. Doctor says start methotrexate. But my question is if there are any latest treatment/technology for this? Will taking methotrexate help? Looks like a local physical issue. Please guide.

Hopefully the injections that you have had are not Steroids, since they have a terrible effect on the remaining cartilage in the knee. Work is strengthening the quads and hamstrings. Stay mobile and active. Take painkillers as needed. Unless the knee joint is completely worn out and your pain is so terrible to make you sit all day long, do not go in for surgery now. Physiotherapy treatment and quadriceps exercises will help you. X-ray must to see. Tk calcium supplement.

Avoid sitting Cross legged. Avoid Squatting- Quadriceps Exercises- Lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core Strengthening Exercise- Straight Leg Raised With Toes Turned Outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams Stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports Taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area Contrast Fomentation (Hot and Cold).

Only physiotherapy and that too exercises in long run and modalities in short run would help and prevent you for going for any operation.
