Hello,
Just touching of cheeks to your son won't cause side effects of retinoids. It could have caused minor irritation due to the applied cream.
You should not be worried. A normal good quality moisturizer can be applied over part where you think there is redness.
Next Steps
apply a good quality moisturizer like Vaseline / white soft paraffin / coconut oil
