Dear patient's son. From what you have said it seems severe osteoarthritis. Reasons is age related degeneration. Precautions. A.  Bend the knee till where it is painless. B.  If squatting painful avoid it. Cure. No way to maintain the original knee gap what it was in young age as it is a degeneration related to age. A.  Physiotherapy session to help tone up her muscle and help her in decreasing the pain intensity and slow down the degeneration and maintain knee gap for long time. B. Pain killers on some occasions when pain is unbearable. C. Your orthopaedic consultant will tell u the right time to replace it with artificial joints.  Just consider that advice as her quality of life will be better with few restrictions such as not allowed to squat. D.  Other treatment as intra articular injection of steroids or hyaluronic acid.  They provide relief for some time in terms of few months to two years.
