Large scale loss of enamel
My dentist has told me I have loss of enamel on most of my teeth and should go for root canal on some teeth and crowns on approx 17 teeth. This is just an estimate as x ray is not yet done. Is it advisable to go ahead with this treatment? If so, who is the best dentist to get this done from in South Goa? I'm only 33 years old. So I want to know if there are any alternative or less invasive treatments.. I tried a tooth guard for some time but heard that that also can be a cause for pressure on the teeth if not designed perfectly. Please advise. Cost is not a problem but I want something that won't cause me pain or problems later.

First of all, it is important to know what your chief complaint is. Is it cosmetic (meaning do you not like the way your teeth look)? Or do you have any issue with your teeth (pain or sensitivity or any other problem)? If it is only because your dentist has told you to get it done, i am assuming from the information you have given that it must be because you are grinding your teeth a lot (this is a habit called bruxism) and your teeth have been damaged a lot. In this case, you definitely have to wear night guard trays. They will be designed alright; just trust your dentist. Also, you need to work on your stress issues in order to get rid of the grinding habit. If this habit persists and if you don't wear the night guard trays, even after you get root canal and crowns done, you will be in trouble. The crowns will keep getting chipped off or even broken and you will need continuous visits. So get that issue resolved first. If you really have an issue like pain or sensitivity, then you have to undergo root canals and crowns as advised. My personal advise will be to get only those teeth treated which are causing trouble at the moment or which might cause trouble soon based on your dentist's advice.
Next Steps
"I want something that won't cause me pain or problems later"...this is what you quoted. No matter what treatment you get done, you have have to visit regularly for check-ups and minor issues. Even a BMW or Ferrari requires regular servicing. A routine check-up every 6 months is advisable.

Dear madam, Do not worry with your condition as it is quite normal for the teeth to wear away especially when you are in a stress related work environment. As to your dentists recommendation of Root Canal Treatment for 17 teeth..... I do not think that should always be necessary. A night guard should be able to relieve you of pain provided it is made up of a suitable quality and of precise measurement.

Second opinion is always welcome and needed
Health Tips
If complaint of pain is existing then Root canal becomes the obvious choice of treatment. Till then it is optional

A rational opinion cannot be given without a look at the clinical condition of the teeth. You can post clinical pictures of your dentition on Practo for a more streamlined opinion. Although the treatment plan seems radical and it would be prudent to look for more conservative treatment options but the best options applicable in your case can be ascertained only after a proper clinical evaluation. You can always take a second opinion from another dentist. Search for an endodontist or a prosthodontist in your vicinity using Practo and try to make a visit as soon as possible. Regards
