Left hand wrist bonecrack
My father aged 66 fell down in the bathroom and cracked bone of his wrists in left hand. we have taken an x-ray. A temp plaster has been put by a local.docyor. we are at a marriage in Jaipur and stay in kolkata. I want to know if it is an emergency so that we fly to our native place kolkata immediately or can we wait for couple of days. Also I want to know if it requires a plaster or a operation/surgery? He is Diabetic with sugar 112 fasting. Hb1c 6.7. he takes wysoline steroid 5 mg every three days. He has hypertension but maintains blood pressure of 130/90.

Hello. Sorry to hear about your father's injury. And well done for being so organised with the information provided. If the crack in the wrist is undisplaced, then it can be treated in a plaster for 5-6 weeks but will require check X-ray at week 1&2. Loss in position may necessitate surgery. Hence it's important that you share X-rays, or trust the opinion of a local orthopaedic surgeon in Jaipur. Also, what is your father on Wysolone for? Steroids can interfere with and slow down fracture healing. However if the reason to have steroids is very important, then they must not be stopped. It's a balance of risk to fracture healing and need for steroids that will affect this decision. Hope it all goes well. Dr M Vashishtha FRCS
