You should also have this discussion with your current psychiatrist about what to expect and how to cope (for the family too). In case you aren't getting your answers and the medication not showing effectiveness for a long time, consider opting for a different psychiatrist. Psychotherapy needs to be introduced as well, without which your father may not be able to accept and develop coping skills to handle this disorder.
