Missed Periods
This is on behalf of my friend. She has missed 2 of her periods in a row. Her last LMP was on 28th of February. No sign of any stomach cramp or nausea or back pain. She never generally have such irregularity. Is there medicine that can help her in this case ? For any probability of Pregnancy, she hasn't taken any test but last time she had an intercourse was on 1st of April, which was around 32 days after her LMP where she had already crossed her usual period time. So I assume that gives a very thin window for that possibility, if any. Should she try progesterone capsules in this case ? Thanks for the advice in advance.

Hi there.Delayed periods could be because of many causes like Significant weight gain or loss,Overexercise,Poor nutrition, anemia, hypothyroidism, Smoking,Eating disorders like anorexia nervosa,Increased stress, Polycystic ovarian syndrome. It's two months amenorrhoea with unprotected sex so I suggest she get urine pregnancy test done once to rule out. If it comes negative then she can take tab medroxyprogesterone 10mg twice daily for 5 days, then within 5 days she wil get her periods. If her next periods are again irregular then get ultrasound abdomen and tsh with cbc done once. Consult gynecologist once..

Hello there. I can understand your concern for your friend but to rule out pregnancy a pregnancy test needs to be done. And it should come negative on atleast 2 occasions and a ultrasound should also be done to be sure she is not pregnant only then any medicines can be given. Don't give her any medicines, get the required tests done and then revert back with the reports or consult a gynaecologist. If she is already pregnant, progesterone won't do anything. If she doesn't want to keep the pregnancy, she can get it terminated under a guidance of a good gynaecologist. Medical termination is possible safely if done under supervision. All the best. Best regards. Dr. Anil Kumar Jain.
