ILooks like what you say is right. It depends on the magnitude and extent of the ligament tear. You need at least 3 to 6 weeks of rest using a proper medial restraint brace rather than knee cap. However if your brace is working that is fine. . probably you are on road to recovery. If the pain is the same.after 6 weeks get an MRI scan and meet orthopaedician. Meeting a physiotherapist is very important in your case to get a proper advice about future athletic activities.
1. Wear proper footwear while running
2. Don't run on hard surfaces like road or pavement. Run on a mud or rubber track
3. Proper stretching and warm up of the body prior to running
4. Maintain proper hydration
Follow these precautions. If your pain still doesn't go away consult regarding medicine
