Feeling low, having crying spells, sleep and appetite disturbances, and difficulty in concentration and attention are some of the signs of Depression. Consult a Psychiatrist for a detailed assessment. It is likely with medication and counseling the symptoms will improve. If he is feeling suicidal or hopeless consult a Psychiatrist immediately

Hi
I understand your concern
He is probably showing signs of depression which could be age related or because of some other condition like thyroid etc. Try to rule out any other condition.
He should immediately seek help. Motivate him. Or tell him to seek help online if jot face to face
All the best
