Pain and infection due to "impacted" (not fully erupted) wisdom tooth is common between the age of 18 to 21 years. Two options: 1. Keep the tooth: Some times, the tooth may have sufficient space to erupt fully. In such cases, the pain is generally transient and subsides on complete eruption. Meanwhile cleaning the area or in severe cases, removing the gum over it is helpful. The idea is not to allow food particles to accumulate and decay, causing infection, pain and foul smell. 2. Remove the tooth: Most of the times, however, the tooth will not have sufficient space to erupt. After a thorough evaluation including a Xray, the wisdom tooth is removed. This may require a minor surgery, if the tooth is locked inside the bone. Throat pain may also be due to the spread of infection from the tooth to the throat or lymph nodes. Don't worry, this is a common occurrence and you will soon be pain free.
Next Steps
Please take a simple pain killer like Paracetamol (if needed) to reduce the pain until you see a dentist.
Health Tips
Take a Xray to see if the tooth has enough space or not, which will decide whether u r a candidate for option 1 or 2 mentioned above.
