If it is only back pain he is suffering from then surgery is unlikely to make a difference to his pain. If he has pain in his legs and buttocks then surgery may help. This is the crucial difference you must be aware of. Medical conditions are not a reason for not giving anaesthetic. Like with a majority of back surgeries success is not assured at all time due to the complexity of the problem. Hope this helps. Dr Vinu Raj Consultant Spine Surgeon MBBS MRCS FRCS(Trauma&Orth)

Chances of curing a disc problem without surgery depends upon degree of nerve compression and symptoms...backache mild or severe,  alone is never an indication for surgery. Anyways if some doctor has advised surgery then he must evaluated ur father in toto...till u make up your mind, mild pain killers and physiotherpay will help...however if surgery is any time required, heart condition can be monitored..these days anesthesia is very safe...all factors are taken care of before patient is taken to ot
