Syringomyelia with scoliosis
Childhood problem with thoracic scoliosis. Have not got an MRI done in the last 10 years. Recent MRI showed syringomyelia in spine. Have long term pain in the back and arms. No loss of heat sensation or strength or mobility problems. Have consulted with neurosurgeons and neurologists. Most of the opinion was not to go for a surgery now and to monitor the situation in a year or so. However, in one of the consultation I was told to go for surgery and look for a scoliosis surgeon as soon as I can or I shall start losing sensation in my feet. Any advice would be appreciated.

Treatment depends on the progression of the disorder and whether you’re experiencing symptoms that disrupt your life. Medications maybe provided to reduce the pain but surgery would be the choice of treatment eventually. The goal of surgery is to correct the underlying cause of the syrinx and relieve the pressure on your spinal cord. The type of surgery will depend on the cause of your syringomyelia. It is seen benefitial to do the surgery before any permanent nerve damage occurs as it will be difficult to recover an already damaged spine, you will require physiotherapy post surgery to recover your functions.
