Meaning of mental patient to lay person refers to severe psychotic and disorganised patient that hardly constitue  about 5% of total mental illness. Generally any mental illness management include medicaton and psychosocial treatment. Generally ward should be patient. Side effect of medication varies from medication to medication. Restrain is last option when safety issue arises. ECT is used on emergency condition or when medication dosent work.
