1. What is UTI?
UTI is Urinary Tract Infection in any part of the urinary system which include kidney, ureters, bladder and urethra. When it affects only the bladder it is called as cystitis, and when it affects the tube through which urine exits the body, it is called as urethritis.
2. What causes UTI?
UTI occurs when the bacteria enter the bladder through the urethra and start multiplying there. However, the urinary tract design is such that it keeps bacteria out. Common organisms are E.Coli, chlamydia and N.gonorrhoeae. Wearing tight fitting undergarments, diabetes, sexual intercourse and kidney stones can increase your chances of a UTI.

Urinary tract infection symptoms are (1) a strong urge to urinate repeatedly, (2) A burning sensation or pain in urethra while urinating, (3) cloudy, dark, bloody or intense smelled urine, (4) fever, and (5) pelvic pain (6) tiredness

UTI can be confirmed by testing the urine sample for infection-causing bacteria. The presence of these bacteria above a threshold level is a sign that you have a UTI. A urine culture too might be ordered to confirm the bacteria that is causing the infection.
5. How can you prevent UTI?
One can prevent UTI by taking some precautionary measures like (1) drinking plenty of fluids especially water to flush out bacteria, (2) drinking cranberry juice, (3) wipe from front to back always when you urinate or after a bowel movement, (4) urinate after having sex, (5) avoid use of feminine products as they may irritate the urethra, and (6) change your birth control method.
