1. What are the common causes of swelling?
Swelling occurs due to any inflammation or fluid accumulation in the tissues. Some of the causes of swelling are injury, insect bites, hives, infections, fluid retention, pregnancy, menstruation, hormonal changes, certain medications, kidney failure, diabetes and certain cancers.
2. What are the symptoms associated with swelling?
Swelling occurring due to injury can lead to pain, and redness of the affected area. If the swelling is caused by hives or insect bites, then there will be itching on the affected area and, sometimes, fever. Other symptoms include vomiting, stretched skin, nausea, weakness and heaviness.
3. Can allergies cause swelling?
Yes, allergies can lead to swelling as histamine and other substances are released in the blood stream after either an insect bite or a reaction to a substance. This in turn causes swelling, redness and itching.
4. Can I use any homecare methods for managing swelling?
Homecare remedies include keeping affected limb or part in the elevated position; short walks in every few minute; ice compression/application on the affected (injured) area; limiting the salt intake; epsom salt bath to soak the affected feet; and staying hydrated by drinking eight to ten glasses of water. One should refrain from alcohol intake as it retains excess water in the body.
5. What treatment methods are available for swelling?
The most common treatment method is keeping the affected parts at an elevated (rested) position. Cold compression is used in case of an injury. Salt-restricted diet and diuretic medicines are prescribed in case of edema. In case of pregnancy, feet elevation, walking and salt diet restriction is advised. Swelling due to kidney troubles requires diuretics, low-protein diet and, also, BP medicines.
