Amniocentesis (AFT)
My wife is pregnant from 12 weeks 10days......now doctor is asking to do test for AMNIOCENTESIS....i need a clear guidance for it...is it is safe or no....& the charge for this is TOO high...so required a proper guidance wheater to do or NO....and need to meet other doctor utgently who can give correct guaidence

Hi ! Amniocentesis is done for 2 main reasons, 1 - to detect any genetic abnormality that baby might be affected with like DOWN SYNDROME, TURNERS SYNDROME etc, esp if there is any strong family history of such genetic diseases. 2- to determine the SEX of the baby, which is highly illegal in INDIA.
Generally it is done between 13-16weeks. So it is recommended only for the 1st reason, not for the 2nd. Definitely you can go for it for ASSESSING ANY GENETIC ABNORMALITY, esp if there is any hereditary in your family. U need not worry about that, but be sure that u r under experts supervision when going with the procedure.
