Hi,
My uncle works in Fire brigade. Before 3 days, one tree branch fell on him which broke 2 of his lower ribs. He is aged 52 with no medical condition. What is the the best recommended method for him to get it healed without a surgery. Please help.
Thank you.

Hello I understand your condition. I would like to know whether he has any difficulty in breathing after the rib fracture? If no, then I would advise rest and not to lift any weights for a minimum of 1 month and he can take calcium supplements in the mean time. If he has difficulty in breathing then he needs a detailed evaluation. I would also like to see his X-Ray.

Hello,
If there is only rib fracture then it is better because rib fractures do not require surgery.
Best recommended treatment protocol for rib fracture is conservative for which I would recommend you to connect with me for accurate prescription
I would advice you to take online consultation so as to know exact type of fracture and whether or not it is causing any negative pressure breathing.

Simple fractures of ribs don't require surgery. Until it is associated with internal organ damage like haemothorax pneumothorax, etc
Since 3 days have passed and u had not mentioned any complications. So most probably he has got simple fractures of ribs which can be v painful especially on coughing and sneezing.

Hi
Hope he is doing well
In cases with rib fracture it is better to rule out damages to any internal organs and there is no major displacement of the fracture fragments
And it's important to evaluate if he has breathlessness and or any hemodynamic instability
If the major internal trauma is ruled out
It's better to take complete rest with deep slow breathing exercises and some strapping or rib corsette is helpful
Next Steps
rest
Health Tips
slow deep breathing exercises and local fomentation and avoid sleeping on the same side.
medications are tremendously helpful in most cases
Rib fracture do not required surgery . But need observation
If it's displaced and can be appreciated in x-rays. Need to keep close watch as rib can penetrate the lungs ( lungs are just behind the ribs) lead to serious complication related to Breathing difficulties. Atleast for next few days . As three days already past and you have posted msg here assume he is in good health. And it is going to hurt him for next 2-4 weeks as breathing is invloved chest expand and collapse - fracture of rib will move , it will give him pain. But can be controlled with rest , Medicine and rib belt.
Next Steps
1.use rib belt for 6-8 weeks do not apply to tight or too loose
2. pain medications + Medicine to reduce swelling (inflammatory )
3. Ice pack over it for 10 min rhrice per day. keep changing the area of fomentation. but keep in thin cloth and. then apply .(no ice application directly to skin)
4.if it's closed to heart area do not use ice at all. it will slow his pulses
5. no massage or no ointment .
6 watch for any breathing difficulty. like heaviness /unable to breath / air hunger etc.
7. avoid sleeping on that side. avoid bending forward .
use bed recliner (adjustable back rest) to take rest on bed.
