Hi Welcome to practo. This is called Pica,  eating non edible item. It is mostly due to biochemical abnormalities in body and mostly due to iron deficiency. So take your friend to a doctor for investigations. If all the investigations comes normal , then it may be due to mental health problems or stress related. Thanks and regards
Next Steps
visit a nearby doctor for investigations and to rule out iron deficiency anemia.
