Depression
My mother has depression from past 12 years, Initially it was on and off but now situation is getting worse. She don't talks to lot of people. She gets anxious if she has to talk to someone other than my father and me. She doesn't come out of the house. She often forgets relations and refer to me as her brother. She has no awareness about the current Year and Date. She sometimes hear voices of relatives or someone she knows. She always refuse to take medications, but daily we convince her to take it. But lately it is getting difficult to force her to take medications. We were thinking of second opinion but she is not ready to leave the house to visit any doctor. Lately we have discovered that she is diabetic and also her vision from one eye is affected. Still she does not want to go out for medical consultation. What should one do in such cases when the patient does not want to leave the house and also not open to any kind of medical consultation. Please help.

Dear friend, Glad to see that you are concerned about your mother. Self withdrawal is a clear sign of depression. Since she is not cooperating for meeting a doctor, first step you can take is to relax her mind. Try and use melodious music at home played regularly in her room or house. If you can use bhajans or mantra chanting type of stuffs. When she is sitting or lying down just play the chanting of OM by the side of her. Hearing OM chanting will help relaxing the mind to a greater extent. Slowly she will agree for taking treatment. Any further assistance required feel free to contact me at your convenience. Wishes

Hi.... Take steps to control stress, to increase your resilience and boost your self-esteem. Reach out to family and friends, especially in times of crisis, to help you weather rough spells. Get treatment at the earliest sign of a problem to help prevent depression from worsening. Consider getting long-term maintenance treatment to help prevent a relapse of symptoms....
