Eyes remain shut for a considerable period during sleep which results in collection of mucoid discharge that collects on the corners and at time dries up. Dry eyes are aggravated during sleep due to lack of sustained blinking except during REM phase of sleep when there is spontaneous blinking. It is recommended that you cleanse your eyes at bedtime with running water and lubricate your eyes using a gel that is thicker than the drops. Lubricating eyes before leaving the bed is right thing to do if you have dry eyes and cleans them later on.

Pls take a second opinion from another doctor regarding this. U may be having blepharitis, but I can't be sure till I've examined ur eye under magnification. As for the dryness, switch to OPTIVE EYDROPS or EUBRI eye drops and use LACRIGEL or GENTEAL GEL ointment just before bedtime. Wash it off in the morning.
