Dyslexia..
Hi, My daughter is is 1'st standard. She is brilliant. However her teacher recently suggested that we do a learning disability test for her as she is having difficulty writing. She can memorize the answers and is very good in orals though. She writes a few letters in reverse symmetry. Please suggest which test should we go for and where. Also, I am married to my first cousin. Please suggest the test we need to conduct to ascertain any genetic disorders and where can we do it. We don't notice any abnormality. She frequently plucks her eyelids. She is just 6. Otherwise she is a very normal child. She is addicted to cartoons. While in sleep she grinds her teeth and salivates. We are very worried for her. Please help. Thanks.

For the learning disability, I would suggest a special educator . For the eye plucking, a detailed history is required - does she do it when she's anxious ? Is it early stage of OCD/trichotillomania ? Is it a tic. Unfortunately there are no genetic tests currently available which can predict learning disability in your next child, so there's nothing that can be done. But if there is a family history of other genetically transmitted diseases in your or your husband's family, testing for them can be done.
Next Steps
enrollment in a special education class.
Health Tips
if it is Trichotillomania, medicines and behavior therapy will help.

There is a particular kind of paper pencil test to assess specific learning disability if any. So, visit any clinical psychologist or any special educator nearby you. They will assess and if there will be any difficulty then go through the proper therapy sessions for that.. clinical psychologist or special educators will do only the therapy sessions. Plucking of eyelid may be a mere symptom of anxiety.. anxiety which may raises due to failure in proper writing.

Sometimes we get upset when we expect everything to be exactly like the way we like. Dyslexia in writing ?? Well ur daughter does not need a test for that right now. Let's have intervention for that . Focus on individual teaching program. Use cartoon watching behaviour as a reinforcement for writing. Example if she write 1 page exactly from book she may be allowed to watch 10 mins of cartoon from TV.
Next Steps
after all this reinforcement n focused individual study if she does not results good we will go for dyslexia assessment. Don't worry for genetic factors. any queries chat with us. Thanks

Nothing to worry my dear mother. If she has difficulty in writing, she has difficulty... That's all. You can visit a special Educator who can diagnose whether there is an issue or not.. You are taking the initiative at the earlier stage itself. I appreciate that. This can be handled much much better than what you have been told or assumed..
