Since you are just starting with complementary feeds, I would recommend u to go slow. Start with liquids like rice Kanji, Dal water, soups, juices and then progress to semisolid and solid foods.
Although u can add spices and herbs for flavoring, try avoiding salt and sugar until the age of one. U can opt for dates or bananas for sweetening. Salt, if added, shouldn't be in the amount that adults eat

Hello.... You can give mashed potato with sugar.. Only till 6 months you shouldn't feed him any anything except breastmilk.... After 6 months gradually start weaning... don’t give them a big serving at first time around, because potato is bit sticky... As baby grows older you can add mashed rice with Dal or ghee. .......
