How long can nipple shield be used
My baby is 10 weeks old now. Mother has inverted nipples and nurse at hospital suggested to use nipple shield. Mother is using nipple shield to breastfeed since birth till now.
Is it okay to use nipple shield till the complete duration of breastfeeding? That is till when baby turns 2 years.
Any side effects because of using nipple shield?

If the mother is still having inverted nipples, you can use the nipple shield because otherwise the baby would not be able to latch effectively. You can also try inverted syringe technique for inverted nipples, video will be available online. The only problem with continuous use of nipple shield is that it can be a source of infection if not sanitized effectively. After every use you will have to rinse it with cold water and then wash under hot running soapy water. Let the shield air dry and then store it in a clean covered container till the next use. Atleast once a day boil in hot water for 20 min.
