For various reasons, we develop certain thought patterns without our knowledge and they tend to be negative. The thought patterns described is "catastrophic thinking."
Sometimes it does help to reflect on one's thinking and rectify. Unfortunately it may become a challenge and lead to other psychological problems, if the pattern has been persistent and the individual is facing stress in life for whatever reason.
