Hi, I am overweight and want to plan my pregnancy. However, I have heard it's important to lose weight before trying to conceive.
I haven't yet started trying however, just wanted some genuine advice if one should lose excess weight first and then try to conceive or is it difficult to conceive with excess fat and weight.
Thanks.

You haven't mentioned your height and weight so I will advise in general not specifically for you.
If your BMI is too high getting pregnant itself is may be difficult and not being able to get pregnant is emotionally draining for many. Loosing weight may avoid the trouble.
Secondly many changes take place after you are pregnant. Blood sugar tends to increase, blood pressure tends to increase during pregnancy.Medication is possible but it puts you in high risk category (meaning possible injury/death to fetus or mother during pregnancy or delivery) If you loose weight before getting pregnant you are reducing the risk of Gestational Diabetes and Pregnancy induced hypertension. Moreover your obesity may be due to Hypothyroidism. If so it has an effect on the brain development of the fetus.
Next Steps
Chalk out a diet and exercise program and loose weight healthily without going for crash diets and without affecting your other health parameters. Some basic to tests may be required.

It is preferable to loose weight before pregnancy as it will also reduce further risks during and after pregnancy. It will also increase your chance to conceive. These following lifestyle changes may help:
- Avoid fatty, oily, fried and junk food
- Exercise regularly (minimum of 30mins)
- Destress yourself with practices such as yoga/meditation
- Maintain a healthy body and diet
- Have vegetable juices
- Include corn, beets, lettuce, drumsticks, and pumpkin seeds in your daily diet
- Avoid smoking and alcohol if you have the habit
