There is no need to worry about using retainers. But when your start wearing it, initially you might have some discomfort, in wearing, eating and also in speaking . Your exams are most critical .
My personal advise is keep your braces till exams are over then you can change your removable retainers.
If you are going for fixed retainers then no issues.
Next Steps
Meet you dentist and asks the pros and cons of the retainer then decide ..
Health Tips
brush your teeth twice daily
use mouth wash regularly
meet your dentist once in six months .

There is no discomfort to wearing retainer.the orthodontics will make the determination for the length of time a retainer is worn based upon treatment provide during the braced process
Hi madam,
In my opinion , wearing retainers will make your orthodontic treatment successful. Initially while wearing it there might be slight discomfort which will disappear in few days when you get adopted to it. You need not worry about it , start using them.
Retainers are an extension of comprehensive orthodontic treatment and play a crucial role in preventing relapse. Their use is not normally associated with any pain or discomfort and therefore you need not worry about that aspect. Now a days, a combination of fixed and removable retainers are used in the initial 6-12 month period. Please discuss about it with your orthodontist. All the best.
