Folic acid supplements are given in the first trimester to prevent congenital malformations in the baby
After 12 weeks most iron supplements prescribed contain folic acid supplements hence separate prescription is not required

It is given alone upto 3 months to prevent neural tube defects. After 3 months given along with iron as ifa preparation and continued till term
