If you are a diagnosed hypothyroid then you need to be on thyroid medication for life long. If you have a thyroiditis, then you may be on hypothyroid for a brief period of time for which you need to take thyroid medication till that period is tide over. Now, it's your physician who has to decide whether it's chronic hypothyroidism or transient hypothyroidism developed due to thyroiditis.
