(1) As per the NHS UK's NICE Guidelines, "FOREHEAD BASED" NCIT (Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer) have been clearly DISREGARDED FOR USE IN CHILDREN in EMERGENCY CARE SETTINGS/ HOME. https://www.community.healthcare.mic.nihr.ac.uk/reports-and-resources/horizon-scanning-reports/hs-report-0025 (See "Guidelines and Recommendations" Section which concludes the Systematic Review of the Methodologies for Temperature analysis). Reason: Due to its widely VARIABLE RESULTS AND HENCE CANNOT BE RELIED UPON for clinical scenarios. At HOME, IT IS BETTER NOT TO BUY THIS, WHERE YOU HAVE AN OPTION OF HAVING TOUCH BASED UNDER ARM DIGITAL THERMOMETERS FOR CHILD/ ADULT, and to avoid contamination, SEPARATE Thermometers can be purchased (& EASY DECONTAMINATION IS POSSIBLE AT HOME using Alcohol based solutions), (2) The PRESENT SURGE in usage of FOREHEAD BASED INFRARED THERMOMETERS, is ENTIRELY due to the prevailing "PANDEMIC" SCENARIO AND in Hospital based settings it takes relatively LESSER TIME or RESOURCES to ENSURE CLEANLINESS UNLIKE THESE TOUCH BASED DIGITAL THERMOMETERS (used Under Arms in Children MOSTLY), BUT AT HOME IT IS RECOMMENDED AS THE DEVICE OF CHOICE. (3) USEFUL Alternatives ARE ---> (A) BEST for EARLY results and PROVEN EFFICACY (AND GOOD REPEATABILITY) WITH ADDED ADVANTAGE OF BEING COST effective, ARE THE ---> DIGITAL TOUCH BASED THERMOMETERS ---> Examples are: Dr Trust's Thermometer at INR 199/ Medlife's own branded Thermometer bendable One at INR 299; (B) TYMPANIC MEMBRANE BASED INFRARED THERMOMETERS (Which have a Blunt Pointed End and need to be inserted CAREFULLY inside the EAR of the Child and the Button for checking has to be pressed. It has DISPOSABLE COVERS at the TIP, to ENSURE CLEANLINESS and NO CROSS INFECTION. (Recommended by the UK Based NICE Guidelines in Children); Examples : Dr Trust's or Mothercare TM IR Thermometers; (3) LASTLY, the least convenient one is to use Rectal based thermometers, which tend to be grossly inconvenient, difficult to use in irritated feverish children, and the fact that it needs to be kept at 1 cm inside is a challenge in most Cases and hence not recommended for routine use either in ER or at Home for Children. But they are the most accurate thermometers among all the technologies mentioned ABOVE.
Next Steps
(1) You may purchase individual Touch Based Digital Thermometers from a Reputed Brand (some of them mentioned above). (2) OR to consider buying TYMPANIC MEMBRANE based INFRARED THERMOMETER WITH DISPOSABLE END CAPS (Example, Dr Trust's or Mothercare, etc and many others).
