1. What are the causes of cough?
The cause of a cough varies based on the duration. The common causes of short-term cough include cold, flu and pneumonia. Persistent long-term cough can be due to reflux of acid into the food pipe from the stomach, smoking and bronchiectasis (the broadening of the airways in the lungs). Bronchitis, sinusitis, allergy and asthma may lead to either short-term or persistent cough.

You should consult a doctor if you have a cough for more than three weeks or if the cough is getting severe. Immediate medical attention is needed if:
- You see blood in the cough
- You are experiencing unexplained weight loss
