1. What are the symptoms of malaria?
You may experience a wide range of symptoms if you have malaria. The most common symptoms are moderate to severe chills, headache, high intermittent fever, excess sweating, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, body pain and severe weakness.
2. What causes malaria?
Plasmodium parasite causes malaria when transmitted through an infected mosquitoe's bite. There are four different types of malarial parasites which may be present in the mosquito. When the mosquito bites you, the parasite enters your blood. Pregnant mothers having malaria can pass it to their babies during birth. Transfusion of infected blood can also cause malaria.
3. How is malaria diagnosed?
Your doctor will carry out a physical examination and take a detailed history of your symptoms. Your doctor will check for enlarged spleen or liver. After this, the diagnosis will be confirmed by blood tests. Blood test reports will reveal the type of malarial parasite causing the disease.
4. How will the doctor treat this condition?
The treatment will depend on the species of the parasite causing malaria and the severity of the disease. Your doctor will prescribe medications from the class of quinines, which are effective antimalarials. He/she may also prescribe fever-lowering medicines and painkillers. In severe malaria, you may be hospitalized and intravenous treatment may be given.
5. Can i get malaria again if I had it once already?
Yes, you may get malaria again. The risk depends on the type and dose of medication you received and the type of parasite that caused malaria. Incomplete elimination of the parasite from the blood can cause malaria again. Also, infection with a species other than the one you got infected with can cause malaria. Two species,P.vivaxandP.ovalecan also cause relapse of malaria.
