Uses of Ertapenem

What is it prescribed for?

Skin and Structure Infection

Ertapenem is used in the treatment of skin and structure infections such as cellulitis, wound infections, etc.

Community acquired pneumonia

Ertapenem is used in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia which is the most common type of lung infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, etc.

Complicated urinary tract infections

Ertapenem is used in the treatment of urinary tract infections caused by E. coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Acute pelvic infections

Ertapenem is used in the treatment of pelvic infections caused by Bacteroides fragilis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Escherichia coli, Peptostreptococcus species, etc.

Complicated Intraabdominal Infection

Ertapenem is used in the treatment of complicated intraabdominal infections caused by E. coli, Peptostreptococcus species, Clostridium clostridioforme, Eubacterium lentum, etc.

Allergy

Hence, this medicine is not recommended for use in patients with a known allergy to lidocaine or any other local anesthetics of the amide type.

General warnings

Drug resistance

Usage of Ertapenem without sufficient proof or suspicion of a bacterial infection should be avoided. Irrational dosing might fail in providing the benefits and even cause toxicity. It may also increase the risk of development of bacteria that are drug resistant.

Renal impairment

This medicine should be used with caution in patients with a known history of renal impairment due to the increased risk of severe side effects. Appropriate dose adjustments should be considered based on the clinical condition.

Diarrhea

Avoid using if you experience severe diarrhea after receiving Ertapenem. This is because antibiotic therapy will cause an imbalance in the microbial flora of the large intestine, decreasing the gut friendly bacteria and promoting the growth of a bacteria called Clostridium Difficile, resulting in diarrhea.
