General warnings

Traveler's diarrhea caused by other bacteria

This medicine is not effective to treat diarrhea which is caused by other organisms like Campylobacter jejuni or shigella strains. Any diarrhea complicated by fever and/or blood in the stool should not be treated with this medicine.

Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea

Avoid the use of this medicine if the patient experiences severe diarrhea after receiving therapy with this medicine. Antibiotic therapy will cause an imbalance in the normal microbial flora in the large intestine, which promotes the growth of a bacteria called Clostridium difficile. This will result in severe diarrhea. Appropriate corrective measures, dose adjustments, or replacement with a suitable alternative may be necessary based on the clinical condition.

Drug resistance

Usage of this medicine without sufficient proof or suspicion of a bacterial infection should be avoided. Irrational dosing might fail in providing the benefits and even cause toxicity. It may also increase the risk of developing bacteria that are drug-resistant.

Liver disease

This medicine should be used with caution in patients with liver diseases due to the increased risk of severe adverse effects. Close monitoring of liver function tests is necessary while receiving this medicine. Appropriate dose adjustments or replacement with a suitable alternative may be required in some cases based on the clinical condition.

Driving or operating machinery
