1. What are the common causes of diarrhea?
Causes of acute diarrhoea are bacterial infections caused by E. coli, Shigella, salmonella, E. histolytica, during travelling, and after surgeries. Chronic diarrhoea can be a result of food allergy, food intolerance, malabsorption syndrome, lactose intolerance, celiac disease and ulcerative colitis etc.
2. What is traveller's diarrhea?
Traveller's diarrhoea, as the name suggests, occurs when people who travel to developing countries and develop symptoms after consuming food and drinking water which is contaminated with bacteria and viruses.
3. How long does diarrhea last?
Acute diarrhoea is due to viral or bacterial infections and generally lasts for three to five days. Chronic diarrhea occurs as a result of an underlying gastrointestinal infection and may be prolonged for 6 weeks or even more.
4. Diarrhea is a symptom of which other health condition?
Other health conditions that can cause diarrhoea include adverse medical reaction especially of antibiotics, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease like Crohn's disease, tropical sprue and gluten allergy.
5. When should one reach out to a doctor in case of diarrhea?
One should visit a doctor if the diarrhoea is not better even after 3 days. If there are worsening symptoms or signs of dehydration, one should visit a doctor immediately.
