Arpita is fantastic. I live in the US and see her for a few appointments every time I am in town. I envy those of you who are in Bombay and can see her more often. because I have a complicated set of problems fro a very serious and very old injury, I need to see her often: as my strength progresses, she takes me to the next level of exercises. I would go to her more often if I were in town.
She started me on gentle exercises for my core. When I went to her, my sciatica would prevent me from walking more than about three quarters of a kilometer at a time. And when it would start to hurt, I would need about 4 Brufen a day for a week before it would go away. Further, I never knew what, if anything, would make it better or worse, as the pain was a blur, seemingly unrelated to anything I did.
Now I don;t take Brufen, and I am able to walk about ten km at a time. My core exercise levels have progressed, and the strengthening of the core is helping my knee. I now recognize activities that make the pain come on, and am able to stop them or modify them right away.
My knee is a very old injury from a serious accident I had at 18 (I am now 51). When I baby the knee, I likely make my sciatica worse. So giving me the right exercises was quite complicated, and Arpita is very much up to the task. We are now working on my knee.
Arpita is a very unusual person. By telling you that I am walking so much more or something I am not describing her strengths, because what I am able to do now is limited by how much of my own effort I have put, and, to be honest, I have been very lazy.
So here are her strengths:
* She makes an effort to recognize the patient's own inclinations, what they like to do and what they have difficulty complying with, and really assesses their specific needs. She did not make me do hard exercises in the beginning, as my physio in the US did, but gentle ones that strengthened me till I could do harder ones.
* She is hugely positive, always smiling and upbeat, always optimistic about the physical activity levels I can reach.
* She is exceptionally sincere, fully present when you are in her office, focused on helping you and not thinking about anything else.
* She is able to identify all kinds of correlations among the various pains you may have, and your exercises are tailored because she understands all these interactions very well.
* She has studied different approaches to strengthening the body and making it more flexible: she applies techniques from traditional physiotherapy, yoga, pilates, etc.
She has made a huge difference in my life. When I think about my US physio, I shudder.
