1. What is syphilis?
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease which can spread very quickly via sexual contact with the infected person. In syphilis, the infected person has high fever and rashes over the genital organs. If syphilis is not treated immediately, it can result in serious health problems over time.
2. What are the symptoms of syphilis?
Syphilis occurs in four different stages and each stage has different signs. Primary stage: sores on the genitals, anus and mouth. Secondary stage: swollen lymph nodes, rashes and fever. Latent stage: no symptoms. Tertiary stage: serious complications of brain, heart and other organs.
3. How does syphilis spread?
Syphilis is transmitted sexually from an infected person. The sores of syphilis are present on lips, mouth, anus, rectum and vagina. Therefore, syphilis can spread by having contact with any of the affected body parts of the person having this infection.
4. How can you avoid getting this infection?
You can avoid syphilis by avoiding sexual contact with an infected person. If you are in a sexual relationship with only one person, who does not have syphilis, you will not get the infection. You may use latex condoms while having sex in case the sores are present on the penis to avoid getting the infection.
5. What will happen if syphilis is left untreated?
If at any stage syphilis remains untreated, it can result in serious complications of the brain and the nervous system (neurosyphilis) as well as the eyes (ocular syphilis). In neurosyphilis, you may see symptoms such as severe headache, numbness, paralysis and mental disorder. If you have ocular syphilis, you may have changes in vision or even blindness.
