1. What is lyme disease?
Lyme disease is an infection which one gets from bacteria. The infection is transmitted by ticks which carry the bacteria from the animals. The infected ticks transfer the infection to humans through their bite.
2. How does lyme disease spread?
Lyme disease spreads through ticks. The ticks feed on the mammals and carry the bacteria. When such infected ticks bite humans, they spread the infection. The infection cannot be transferred from person to person.
3. What are the symptoms of lyme disease?
Following are the symptoms of the Lyme disease: skin rashes that begin as a red spot and spread in a period of days to a week. The rashes are typical and have a bulge in the centre; fever; headache; body pain; joint pain and stiffness; numbness and weakness of muscles; and temporary paralysis of facial muscles.
4. Can serology tests accurately diagnose lyme disease?
Yes, serology tests can give accurate results for Lyme disease when done in a particular period after the bite. Usually, when you have rashes after the infection during the period of the first few weeks, the test results are negative. However, when done after this period, you get accurate results.
5. Can lyme disease be transmitted sexually?
No, there is no scientific evidence that supports the spread of Lyme disease through sexual contact. The bacterium that causes Lyme disease cannot be transmitted from person to person sexually. If both partners get lyme disease, then it may be due to an infected tick bite that has gone unnoticed.
