Thrombin time assesses the third stage of coagulation, namely the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin, and consequently is used as a screening test for fibrinogen. The test is affected by concentration and reactivity of fibrinogen, and the presence of inhibitory substances, such as fibrin degradation products and heparin.
