What is Skin Biopsy and why is this done?
Skin biopsy is the process of obtaining a small tissue sample of the skin from an individual. The size and region of the sample to be collected is based on the type of diagnosis of an individual. The healthcare provider may recommend this test to identify the cause of the specific skin condition. The possible skin conditions or diseases which might require skin biopsy include warts, moles, keratitis or keratosis, melanoma, skin infections, rashes, skin tags or skin infections, blisters of unknown origin, etc.
What is a Biopsy?
The biopsy is the process of collecting a small sample of tissue from various parts of the body. The sample for biopsy may include skin, the lining of the stomach, kidneys, liver, a fragment of bone or bone marrow, etc. This procedure is more like a minor surgery and an individual may recover within a day to one week based on the procedure. In this type of procedure, your doctor administers a small dose of local or systemic anesthetic during the surgery and collects a small sample of tissue from the suspected organ site and is sent to the laboratory for further analysis.
