Osteophytes are basically small bony growth/bone deposition on the joint edges where there's loss of bone/cartilage.
It is body's natural mechanism to stabilize the joint in cases of damaged joint.
They can be painless or painful and restricting the joint by stabilizing it more.
So if it's very acute/intolerable pain, take anti-inflammatory and pain killer. This would be first line management. Also vit. D and calcium are essential.
For the long term, strengthening of your neck and upper back, incorporated with neck stretches and posture correction would be very helpful.
